Sherlock Holmes Review

Let’s get it straight right away: Sherlock Holmes, directed by Guy Ritchie, is quite a riot and one of the most entertaining movies of the year.

Just fresh off capturing and witnessing the hanging of Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), an occult serial killer, Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and Dr. Watson (Jude Law) are stunned to hear rumors that he has resurrected back from the dead and resumed his killing spree. To complicate matters, Watson is planning to get married to pretty Mary Marstan (Kelly Reilly) and move out of good old 221b Baker Street to Holmes great despair. Holmes, hilariously resolved not to let that happen, attempts to sabotage his friend’s proposal while hunting down Lord Blackwood. Holmes perks up considerably though when his tempestuous old love interest, the fetching Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams) pops back in town for some mysterious business.

The New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic

It has long been a Philharmonic tradition at the New Year to present a program consisting of the lively and at the same time nostalgic music from the vast repertoire of the Johann Strauss family and its contemporaries. These concerts not only delight the audiences in the Musikverein in Vienna, but also enjoy great international popularity through the worldwide television broadcasts, which now reach over 50 countries.

Originating during a dark period of Austria’s history, these concerts were initially conceived for a local audience as a reminder of better times and a source of hope for the future. Today millions of people throughout the world are similarly encouraged by the light-hearted yet subtly profound character of this music, and draw joy and optimism for the New Year ahead.

It is the desire of the Philharmonic not only to provide musically definitive interpretations of the masterworks of this genre, but at the same time, as musical ambassadors of Austria, to send people all over the world a New Year’s greeting in the spirit of hope, friendship and peace.

Gossip Girl

“Good morning Upper East Siders, Gossip Girl here, you’re one and only guide to Manhattan’s elite.” The quote that started it all. Gossip Girl is a television series based from the book of the same name.

It is also obvious that Gossip Girl’s target audience is for girls but even guys get hooked.  Basically the show is mostly about a group of teenagers aged around 14-18 who attend a rather elite high school, St Jude’s, which is based in New York’s Upper East Side. Gossip Girl is a narrator, who is unseen during season 1 and so far in season 2.

Within the main characters there are various relationships – Blair and Nate are portrayed as the perfect society couple at the start of the season but as the season progresses we see there are many cracks in their relationship, including a naughty encounter Nate has with Serena just before her self-imposed exile. Serena is determined not to rekindle their fling on her return as she is Blair’s best friend and was the “Queen” before she ran away and Blair assumed that particular position in the school “gang”. Then Serena and Dan fall for each other, a relationship which is highly discouraged by her best friend Blair who treats Dan like something she stepped on and is made more complicated by the fact that Serena’s mother and Dan’s father were once lovers.

Avatar

Do you like Pocahontas? Do you enjoy painting with all the colors of the wind? Only in a crazy rendered 3d world created from the mind of James Cameron? Then perhaps Avatar is the movie for you!

There have been movies which have been controversial upon their release. The Catholic church practically waged war on “The DaVinci Code”, and the conservatives labeled Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11″ a bleeding-heart liberal doctrine. Avatar is one of them.

The tale of “Avatar”, based upon a humanoid and extraterrestrial race, provides a fruitful, relishing and striking array of fluorescent colours, story lines and character illustration that keeps the audience fixated upon the world of “Pandora”. After the death of his scientist brother, crippled marine Jake Sully agrees to control his avatar and research the Na’vi under the supervision of fellow Avatar, Grace. Although Grace is Jake’s boss, he is also under orders from military commander Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) to infiltrate the Na’vi and point out all of their weaknesses for a future military attack. While exploring the planet, Jake befriends Na’vi princess Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), who then takes him to meet her clan. It is decided that Neytiri will teach and train Jake in the way of her people. Eventually Jake becomes drawn in by the proud group of blue skinned warriors and begins to question whose side he should be on.

The Oprah Winfrey Show Finale

The Oprah show has been a mainstay in many lives throughout the years. Many people have enjoyed watching her on television and her many other programs that are on the air and in print. Many people have faithfully watched her show for many years almost twenty five to be exact. Unfortunately in late 2009 Oprah Winfrey announced that her hit talk show of many years will end in 2011.

Winfrey told the audience that she loved “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” that it had been her life and that she knew when it was time to say goodbye. “Twenty-five years feels right in my bones and feels right in my spirit,” she said.

In addition to a great television show among other things, Oprah has her outstanding book club. Oprah’s book club has been around since 1996. Oprah’s book club has introduced many books that may not have been noticed by the majority of readers.

Winfrey offered no specifics about her plans for the future, except to say that she intended to produce the best possible shows during her last 18 months on the air. Many fans heading into Harpo Studios on Friday morning seemed to support Winfrey’s decision.
